Benefits of Moissanite
Lab created gemstone
Significantly less expensive than a diamond
9.25 on Mohs Scale of Hardness, great for everyday wear
What Is Moissanite?
Unlike a normal diamond, Moissanite is made from silicone carbide. It is considered one of the world’s most scintillating gemstones. All Moissanite are lab-created to give the illusion of similarity to diamonds, but are compositionally and chemically different from a natural diamond.
Moissanite Vs. Diamond
Durability:
A diamond has a hardness of 10 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness while a Moissanite scores a 9.25. The Mohs Scale is used to test the durability of gemstones ranging from 1 as the softest and 10 as the hardest. Both gemstones are considered very durable for everyday wear.
Price:
Moissanite gemstones cost significantly less when compared to a natural diamond or a lab created diamond. It is a great option for price points under $5,000 as most common sizes (1ct-2.5ct) Moissanites range anywhere between $600 - $1,700. Natural diamonds within 1ct-2.5ct would range anywhere between $5,000 - $70,000 based on color and clarity.
Brilliance:
One quality Moissanites are adored for is their ability to radiate color under any light. Moissanites have a high refractive index in which they refract light very well. According to Charles & Colvard’s Gemstone Comparison Chart, a Moissanite’s Brilliance Refractive Index is anywhere between a 2.65-2.69, and a diamond is a 2.42. Fire dispersion is a factor as well, and according to the same chart a Moissanite’s fire dispersion is higher than a diamond as well. Therefore many would say Moissanites appear more brilliant than a diamond.
Why some of our client’s choose Moissanite?
Many of our client’s consider using a Moissanite as their center gemstone because it is significantly less expensive than a diamond. It is a great consideration for those with budgets of $5,000 or less wanting a large, beautiful center stone.
It is also a great option for those who want to purchase a 2ct engagement ring (which normally starts at $18,000) but cannot afford a natural diamond. A Moissanite can be a placeholder for their future diamond when the time is right.
Others love the eco-friendly aspect of the Moissanite gemstone and that’s where they usually decide between a Moissanite or a Lab Created Diamond. Moissanite is still less expensive.
